Katie's Declassified College Survival Guide

The other day I was thinking about my life before I started college. I did so much research and I pinned all sorts of little things about school and surviving the college life. Unfortunately there was a lot that I missed. There is so much that I have learned so far in my first semester of college that I want to share.

I hope this can be of use to someone. I know that I would have liked to have some of these FYIs before I moved my butt to Las Vegas!

1. You're probably going to get sick.  Apparently everyone gets sick especially in their first semester. I thought I was immune because of the military. I was always in close proximity with people. Wrong. I got sick and it made me miss work and class in a bad way! Get some day/night cold medicine. Sleep. Use things like Airborne or EmergenC when you feel the sniffles coming on and wash your hands.

2.  You will likely feel an overwhelming urge to skip class. Don't.  Most schools have an attendance policy. If you skip class, it can really affect your grade. Not only that, you won't know what's going on in the next class and you're going to miss a lot of things that you wouldn't have if you had simply gone to class.

3.  Studying is hard. I took TWO years off of school before I started college.  I didn't know it would make such a difference, but it did. Turn off your phone close out the Netflix/Pinterest tabs and focus.  If you can't do it in your room or at home, go to the library.

Good Idea
4.  Time management is hard too. Use your planner. Most schools will give you one for free. A lot of the time, they have all of your school events in them though. It can take up a lot of space.  Walmart also has good, cheap planner. If you are someone who really needs some discipline or you are exceptionally busy, plan a time for everything to keep you from getting overwhelmed.

5.  College is stressful.  I thought that I would be just fine, but I, like so many do, got overwhelmed with stress.  The best thing I have found for this is to take a break or have some outlet for all the stress. I like to go to the gym, so I make sure to do that as often as I can and it certainly helps.

6.  You don't want a single.  What I mean by that, is that roommates are a good thing. My roommate isn't here most of the time. We aren't friends and I never see her. I may as well have a single and I think it has prevented me from making friends and really enjoying my college experience.  I may as well have a single. I don't have a built in friend, and trust me, you'll want one. Especially if you're like me and going to a school where you don't know a single person to start with!

7.  Sometimes  you will have bad luck.  Bad luck doesn't mean you're doomed though. I've had multiple experiences (Exhibits A & B ) since I've lived 400 miles away from my parents where the first thing I do is call my mom or my dad. It's okay. In fact, it was probably the best thing to do. Eventually, I took care of all the bad luck on my own, but it calmed me own and made me feel a whole lot better to talk to my parents about it before I made any decisions.

8.  Books are expensive.  Seriously. So expensive. If you can help it, avoid the campus bookstore and use other resources like Amazon or borrow from others! It is worth it to avoid the several hundreds of dollars spend on books, that a lot of the time, never get opened...

9.  Some of your professors are really going to suck. I have yet to really learn anything at all in my English class because we pretty much never actually do anything. It is crappy. I pay for that class and I want to learn something from it. I highly recommend using Rate My Professor when you are choosing your classes.

10.  College education is very expensive. Take advantage of your resources. Do you have any idea how many thousands of dollars of college scholarships go unclaimed every semester?! There are so many ways to get college paid for.  There is even a scholarship for being a blogger. I'm totally serious!  For me, I have many untapped resources that I've had trouble getting, but when I start again next fall, I'm going to have things figured out and I'm going to do it right and you should too!

Here are some additional resources that I either found helpful or wish I would have tried when I started college!

The Art of Writing

In my English 101 class, we are required to do a presentation on the art of writing.

I really would like to write mine with a blog post or "article" as we are calling it in the class...But here's the thing, I can't find posts on my favorite blogs about the "art of writing."

So I'm asking a favor of all you lovelies out there. In the comments leave me links :)

I'm looking for blogs that talk about writing. I only need one post, but I would love to read a lot of them. I want to be able to make comparisons and have a really good understanding of how people use their blogs artistically.

Of course, any blogs used in this project will be properly cited and I will share the presentation with anyone who would like to see it when it's complete!

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help!

Single's Ward?

 Although I'm not a particularly perfect member of the LDS church, I do have quite and interest in it. Honestly, I always have.

There is something that you have to understand about where I grew up everyone is Mormon. I have probably...5 friends that are not LDS that I grew up with. Granted, a lot of them were raised in the church and are no longer active or their whole family is no longer active in the church...there is a large variety of "types" of Mormons.

Well, one of the main things in our church is the strength in families. They have these things called "Young Single Adult" wards. Basically, everyone who attends your service is young and unmarried. The purpose is to help you find your eternal companion.

They show you pictures like this and they tell you that you are in the "magic age" when you turn 18, because you are now, a young single adult.

Mormon Dating
Sounds nice doesn't it?

Well, I'm about to find out, because I'm going to go to one!

Right? I can see the look of shock on all of your faces. Why would this girl want to go to a single's ward?

I don't really know if it will be the right fit for me. Maybe there will be too much marraige talk, maybe it will make me feel guilty. Maybe I will absolutely hate it.

But on the other hand, I could make some good friends, maybe do some fun activities, I might even learn something along the way. So, I've decided to go for it. Who cares about all the what ifs? I'm going to
just...do me :)

~~~~~~~
This weekend I am going to be tres busy playing Warrior. I will return on Monday with plenty of photos of my exciting weekend in the field shooting M16s and pretneding that I'm an 11BangBang.
Have a nice weekend everyone!
Katie Lately
I suppose it has been a while since I have really updated ya'll on me.
So what's new with me that isn't filled with deep meaning and planning and insanity?
As I have said before, I live in Las Vegas now. That is definitely new!
I cannot stay away from dessert...I never used to like sweets, but all of a sudden? Cheese cake, carrot cake, chocolate cake...it's all I think about.
Now that I have one tattoo, I want 5 or 6 more.
I still really love to work out.  There is an awesome free gym for students with an indoor track...it's amazing.
I'm a Student...Whoa. It's still weird to say that out loud.
I still love nail polish.
Recently, I have actually really been into the colors pink and purple...I used to really hate pink.
You know that song, "We Can't Stop"? Well I can't stop....playing it over and over again.
Speaking of music, Spotify? Best thing that ever happened to this universe next to Netflix and Hulu.
I have decided to be an Anthropology Major.
My career goal is to work in a museum. I want to be a curator or something of the sort.
I haven't really made many friends here yet, but I'm not minding just being alone. It's kind of nice.
I feel this insane need for adventure...I have a newfound want for something well new.
I love being and Auntie. So. Much.
I'm missing home and I miss my family but overall, I am so happy to be experiencing a new place and having a whole different lifestyle. I think it's really good for me and for my life in the future to have had many different setting in which I've had to live my life. Something tells me that this is just the beginning...
Can't Not
Now that I live in a place filled with new and interesting attractions, I've decided to make a lil' bit of a list of the things that I just can't not do while I live here. Go ahead, comment on the double negative. I don't really care.
I had a little adventure out on the Strip on Saturday and scouted out a few things that I just have to do or see or live or try or you know, whatever :)
Saturday's adventure ^
Some of these things are on the pricey-er side and may not happen, but they're going on the list anyway. Maybe the list will help to make them happen!
So, in no particular order...things to see, do and otherwise experience whist living in this lovely city of Las Vegas.
Nevada Test Site Atomic Museum
The Fountain Show at the Bellagio
The Conservatory at the Bellagio
M&M's World
Fall of Atlantis at Caesars Palace
The Chocolate Factory
Fremont Street
The Volcano at the Mirage
The Las Vegas sign
The Venetian's Grand Canal
Pin Ball Hall of Fame
Mob Museum
The Roller Coaster at New York New York
Sky Jump Las Vegas
Lake Mead
Mt. Charleston
Hard Rock Hotel (I want to stay there)
Every free art gallery on the strip
Miracle Mile
I didn't expect to love it here, but I really do and I can't wait to live this new life.
Have you been to/lived in Vegas? What is missing from my list? Help me build upon this!
I Am Soo Not In Kansas Anymore
Oh. My. Gosh.
What a life this is going to be...
You know, I knew that it was going to be different living in Nevada. I knew that the culture here is different and the lifestyle for most people is different. But the first thing I noticed when we stopped overnight in Mesquite was this.
BAM! Mini bottles of liquor for $1 at the Wal Mart!
Say whhhaaaaat?
At home in Utah, they aren't even allowed to carry Smirnoff Ice or Mike's Hard Lemonade in the grocery stores because it's "too appealing to children". You have to go to the liquor store just to buy bitch beer. Pardon my language, but, I call 'em like I see 'em.
Las Vegas is...Over whelming to say the least. Salt Lake is a fairly big city, but I know it. It's home. And I don't live in the City, I live in the burbs...So now that I'm living just a little ways off the strip smack dab in the middle of a big ol' city, I am really feeling the shock.
I just moved into my dorm room on the UNLV campus. Talk about enormous. I am lost and I am just sitting in my room. My little, tiny, white cinderblock room.
I cannot believe that this chapter in my life has finally begun. I am scared out of my mind but...I am going to do it anyway.  What other choice do I have really? I haven't got one. My dorm room is...small. But it is basically what I expected. It's nothing special. But it's mine.
Please, no comments on my perfect corner, I know they look great ;)
I am going from Soldier Girl to College Girl real quick...and let me tell you...I am so not in Kansas anymore.
